Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Harcourt Canteen Update 2020

The Harcourt Canteen tender process was conducted this term for a lease period running the HPS canteen from 2020. The successful tenders were 'Fresh Start Canteens' which owns and operates several school canteens across the Sydney region. Attached is a Harcourt 2020 Canteen menu for your reference.

We thank Maria and David who have operated the canteen over many years at Harcourt for their service and commitment to the Harcourt community. We wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

She was 1 of 15 students selected from 193 schools.

Olivia has excelled in Public Speaking competitions over several years in both English and Korean. A fantastic representative of our Harcourt Community.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Harcourt Public School will be holding the School Fun-Run Community Day as a major fundraising event this year on *Friday 13 December*!

About the Program

The School Fun-Run promotes healthy and active lifestyles while helping us raise funds! It’s all about participation, with students treated to a great day as a reward for their fundraising efforts. Family support is key to our fundraising success and we encourage everyone to get involved.

How Does My Child Fundraise?

Firstly, go to schoolfundraising.com.au and create a student profile page. Everything to do with your fundraising revolves around this page. Once you have completed this, read through your Sponsorship Form, which has instructions on how to raise money and order prizes.

Students who raise just $10 will receive a reward for their effort. The more they raise, the better their reward – don’t forget to check these out in the sponsorship form! We have educated students on the dangers of door knocking without adult supervision, and we encourage you to reiterate this at home. The best people to ask for sponsorship are people you know (e.g. friends, family, work colleagues and neighbours).

Getting Involved

Not only can you support the school and students with your sponsorship – but you can join in on the fun! We would love to welcome parents and family members to attend the School Fun-Run. If you would also like to volunteer to help on the day, please contact me on the details below. I can’t wait to see you at our event!

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Tell Them From Me Survey 2019

PSSA Winter Comp Success

PSSA Winter Sport Finals was held on Friday 16th August. Harcourt Public School had 4 teams qualify for the semi-finals:
- Junior Touch Football
- Senior Touch Football
- Junior Football A
- Senior Netball A

All semi-final games were very close with Junior Football losing 1-0 to McCallums Hill PS and Senior Netball going down by a couple of points to Earlwood PS. The junior touch football team drew their match 3-3 against Earlwood PS but lost in extra time. The senior touch football team won 5-3 against Campsie PS and progressed through to the grand final. Our students were very excited to be playing in their first touch football grand final! All coaches reported back on the fantastic behaviour shown by our students during the finals.

Congratulations to the Senior Touch Football team who won 10-2 against Ashbury PS! They played with fantastic teamwork and respect all season. It was a very deserving win as the team went undefeated all season.

Thank you to all students, parents and teachers who have contributed to make PSSA Winter Sport competition a very successful one for Harcourt PS. We now look forward to training over the next few weeks for our PSSA Summer competition which starts up again on Friday in Week 9 of this term.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

School Photos are taking place on Tuesday 7^th May 2019 (Week 2, Term 2). All students are required to wear their full school summer uniform.

If the weather is cool please pack the summer uniform in your child's bag so that they can change into their summer top before the photo.

FAMILY (SIBLING) PHOTOS - Current HPS students only

For students wishing to have a family photo (school students only), these will be taken in the School Hall, between 8.00am and 8:45am on the day. Family photos will not occur after this time. While there will be minimal teacher supervision from 8.15am, we recommend that parents remain with their children until there will be the usual level of supervision in the playground at 8.45am.

PAYMENT ENVELOPES

Photo payment envelopes will be sent home with your child Tuesday 30 April (first student day of Term 2). Payment details will be via the school photographer website.

All photo payment envelopes should be returned to your child’s teacher by Monday 6^th May.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

We invite our families to join Harcourt Kinder to Year 5 students to celebrate a successful year at school.

Parents and carers will join in activities held in classrooms and around the school.

The Harcourt P&C will be selling ice-creams, soft drinks and jewellery on the day so don’t forget to bring along your money to support our fundraising initiatives.

We also invite you to bring along your rugs and blankets and stay for a picnic lunch with your children. Lunch will be held at 11:15am – 12:00pm on the day.

Please note: Year 6 students will be attending their end of year celebration at Luna Park on the same date.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Review into the non-educational use of mobile devices in NSW schools

The NSW Minister for Education has launched a review into the risks and benefits associated with the use of mobile digital devices, primarily smartphones, in NSW schools. The review will examine the policies, practices and views of both government and non-government schools in NSW, including schools for specific purposes and central schools.

Submissions will be accepted up to 19 October 2018.

Survey responses will inform the findings in this report and any presentations. They will be read and considered by the team conducting the review. At Harcourt we value the close partnership we have with our neighbouring Wangee Park campus.

As part of our 2018-2020 School Plan we aim to build upon relationships within and external to our school community.

Stage 1 students have recently been involved in our Connect To Learn & Play program offering games and activities to build skills and form social relationships with students at Harcourt and Wangee Park.

The Scholastic Book Fair is on!

It will be in the library on Monday 27th August till Thursday 30th August. The library will be open before school and at lunch times.

There is a range of fiction and non-fiction books for sale to satisfy all reading interests and ages. The Book Fair is a wonderful opportunity for children to purchase books they love to read!

Father's Day Stall 30 August

Dear Parents / Carers,

Harcourt Parents and Citizens' Association (P&C) will be holding a Father's Day Stall this year on Thursday, 30^th August as part of the P&C fundraising initiatives for 2018.

Teachers will be taking each class to visit the stall during the morning, which allows each child the opportunity to purchase some lovely gifts.

This year we have a variety of gift, ranging from $2 - $6. Children are invited to purchase gifts for their fathers, grandfathers and uncles.

Children are asked to bring cash only to school on the day of the stall. Please place the money in an envelope with your child's name and class on the front if possible.

All proceeds from this stall will support Harcourt students in their learning experiences.

We would love your assistance

If you are able to spare an hour or two between 09.00 am and 12.30 pm on Thursday, 30^th August, can you please email us at pandchps@hotmail.com by August 28th. We would love to see some wonderful parents assist if you can spare some time.

Congratulations to the 15 students (6 of these students also have reserved positions) who have been offered direct positions and the 5 students who are on the reserve list for Year 7 at selective high schools including Granville Boys, Sefton High, Sydney Secondary College, Fort Street High, St George Secondary, Sydney Technological College and Sydney Girls High School in 2019. From our 72 Year 6 students, 43 children sat the test.

Kindergarten 2019 Enrolments

Enrolment

We are now taking Kindergarten enrolments for 2019.

Starting School

Your child can start Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if they turn five on or before 31 July in that year. By law, all children must be enrolled in school by their sixth birthday.

Because students start new work in their new class at the beginning of the school year, it would be an advantage for your child both socially and educationally, to start school as soon as possible in the new year. Kindergarten enrolments for 2019 are students born on or between 01/08/2013 to 31/07/2014.

To ensure that Harcourt Public is your local area primary school you can check through the NSW Department of Eeducation School Locator Website. Simply enter your address to check if you live within our catchment area.

Due to the recent wet weather Canterbury Council has notified that all grounds under its management are closed. This means our scheduled Year 3-6 Athletics Carnival has been postponed until a later date (to be advised).

School for Years 3-6 will be as normal tomorrow (Wednesday 20 June).

Dear Parents / Carers,

The P&C are holding a 'Loose Change Fundraiser' over the next two weeks and we want you to bring in any change that you can spare: 5c, 10c, 20, 50c, $1 or $2!

Each class (K-6) will have its own tub for collecting this spare change and the winning class will be the one who raises the most money during this period. Your teacher will also be in charge of collecting the money for their class.

So start looking for any spare coins you may have and bring them in for collection. You'll be surprised how quickly these coins can add up. So come on... what are you waiting for!

Prize:

The class who raises the most money will enjoy a movie afternoon with popcorn or ice-block (in their classroom). They will also be presented with an award at assembly on Friday 6th July.

The money raised will be used to make improvements at our school.

Visitors To The School

Visitors to School

We request that any person visiting our school grounds during the school day goes to the Admin Office first to sign in and collect a visitor badge. This allows us to keep track of people on our school grounds. Of course, those here prior to 9.15am or from around 2.45pm to pick up children after school or attending assemblies, need not sign the visitors log.

If you need to drop off lunch / recess or uniform item please do this at the office and we will deliver the item to your child to minimise interruption to learning.

Visitors on our site during the school day should display our visitor badges. If the visitor is a maintenance worker or contractor, they will display their relevant identification badge.

Every teacher will bring their class down to the stall and all students will have the opportunity to purchase some lovely gifts.

Student Eye Care Program - Postponed

Dear Parents / Carers,

The student eye care program which began last week unfortunately has to be postponed until the beginning of Term 2. This is due to the Student Eye Care coordinator taking earlier than expected maternity leave and a replacement practitioner not available until after the school holidays.

Several Year 3 students have already been assessed during Week 9. All other students who have submitted forms are scheduled to be assessed over the first two weeks of Term 2.

Pyjama Day

The Student Representative Council (SRC) is comprised of two representatives, elected from each class, in addition to the captains, vice captains and prefects of our school.

The SRC meet every fortnight on a Tuesday with Mr Chong and Ms Nicos. They are the voice of the student body and help make decisions about upcoming events, some fundraising initiatives and suggestions from the students in ways to improve the school. Students are encouraged to make suggestions on how to help improve the school.

On Tuesday 27 March 2018 our SRC will be holding a PYJAMA DAY. This was just one of the events most voted for by students in the SRC. The students are encouraged to wear their favourite pyjamas (or onesie) to school. Please ensure your child wears appropriate and warm pyjamas. Students need to wear appropriate footwear (runners etc) to school and on the playground (No slippers or thongs allowed).

Please note: if your child does not wish to wear his/her pyjamas, s/he must wear school uniform as usual.

The SRC is asking all students who participate in this fundraiser to donate a gold coin with

proceeds going towards STEWART HOUSE.

GRIP Leadership Conference

Leader's Conference by Chris Valassis (School Captain)

On the 7th of March, Harcourt's school leaders attended the GRIP Leadership Conference. At the conference we learnt how leaders are transformers and that we can transform ourselves to become effective leaders and make positive changes. I particularly enjoyed when students had the opportunity to perform activities on stage. Communicating and networking with other schools, sharing ideas and explaining my views on the topic was one of my highlights of the day. Overall it was a great experience and I highly recommend all students to attend this conference.

Reading Every Day (R.E.D.) Program

We are looking for volunteers to be a part of a reading program to support our students in MultiLit.

MultiLit is a program that supports students who need a little extra, small group tuition in reading.

Volunteers are needed to listen to students read so they can practise their skills and build confidence and fluency. Volunteers will listen to students read one to one.

Do I need any special skills?

No. You just need enthusiasm! A training session will be held for volunteers. All resources needed will be provided...... just come along and join in.

Where and When?

Reading Every Day will run in the mornings, Monday to Thursday, 9.20 – 10.00, in the MultiLit room, with Mrs Pearson. You can drop your child at school and stay for reading.

If you are available to help with reading on any of these days, it will be greatly appreciated. Just once a week is really helpful.

WWCC - Volunteers will require a Working With Children Check number.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE - WEEK 7 TERM 1

Dear Parents & Carers,

With our 20 classes settled and now well into their Term 1 learning programs I would like to congratulate the school staff (teachers and support/Admin staff) on the fantastic job they have done in ensuring such a smooth start to the school year. With 530 students and over 30 staff it is no easy task to ensure all timetables, rosters, stock orders, student needs, learning support programs etc. are all arranged, coordinated and in place. I would also like to acknowledge our students for the great way they have begun the year. Our expectations are visible, taught and promoted and the students are clearly trying to meet those expectations.

Contact with staff

Thank you to all parents who attended our recent ‘Meet The Teacher' sessions. We encourage parents to get to know their child's class teacher and establish a good, positive communication relationship. We do ask that when contacting your child's class teacher you make an appointment for a mutually convenient time as teaching staff have a number of demands on their time. Despite these demands, our teachers welcome any queries, concerns etc. you have so that they can be discussed and a positive home/school relationship developed. Please make contact with them so that we can work together to achieve growth in learning outcomes for our girls and boys. Your understanding by making appointments to speak to the teachers at an appropriate time is greatly appreciated.

NAPLAN

The NAPLAN tests are taking place on Tuesday 15, Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 May, with Friday 12 May being the catch-up day if a student is absent for one or more of the test aspects. Please note that in 2018, the Writing task will be a single common task for all students in Years 3 and 5.

Selective High School Test – Thursday 15 March

Applicants for Year 7 placement in a selective high school in 2019 are required to take the Selective High School Placement Test to be held from 9.00am to 1.30pm on Thursday 15 March 2018. The test centre for students from our school is Belmore Boys High School, Burwood Rd Belmore. Students should arrive by 9.00am and will be dismissed following the test at approximately 1.30pm. All applicants' parents were sent a letter advising them about the test centre their child is required to attend. In addition, they received a copy of the document test information for parents and students. Please contact me if you have not received this information.

School Playground Equipment

The school play equipment is not be used before or after school.

This is to ensure the safety of all students. A roster is used at lunchtimes to supervise all students so that they can access the equipment. A teacher is on duty to provide supervision and ensure safety.

Please refrain from allowing children to use or climb on the equipment before or after school.

Coles - Sports For Schools

Coles Online customers will not receive physical Vouchers at time of delivery. During the Campaign, Coles Online customers must register to receive Vouchers for their Coles Online transactions. At the time of registration, Coles Online customers will be required to select their nominated school to receive any Vouchers earned during the Campaign. Transactions for registered Coles Online customers will be recorded and a Voucher tally will be calculated on all Vouchers earned. At the expiry of the Campaign, Coles Online customers will be advised by e-mail of the details of their final Voucher tally. Vouchers will then be transferred to the nominated school's online tally without any further action required by the customer.

Student Eye Care Program - Delayed

Dear Parents / Carers,

Due to an overwhelming response to our Student Eyecare Program the company operating the service has rescheduled Harcourt Public School's engagement.

As we now have over 270 returned forms the company required a longer period to operate and could not fulfill the large number of students in the allotted time.

The Student Eyecare Program will now visit Harcourt from Tuesday 27 March - Friday 6 April.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Parents and Citizens' Association Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on Friday, 2 March 2018 at 10:15am in the School Library (morning tea and nibbles provided).

At the AGM each year, all P&C Committee positions are declared vacant and election of all new Committee Members will take place. All members of the school community, both old and new, are invited to nominate for any of the positions detailed below, and are encouraged to attend the meetings, participate in the voting and become involved in the running of the school for the year to come.

Positions open for nomination are:

Treasurer

Nominations for these positions can (and must) be made on the nomination form attached below. Nominations should be left in the P&C AGM Box in the school office or emailed to pandchps@hotmail.com.

Please note that nominations MUST be signed and accepted by the person being nominated for the position as well as being signed by you the nominator.

You must be a financial member to nominate yourself or someone else for these positions – and you must be a financial member of the Harcourt P&C to vote at the AGM on Friday, 2 March 2018.

P&C Executive Committee Positions:

President – Chairs meetings each month including one AGM each year, plus any other special P&C meetings called. Supports the school principal as and when required in a range of activities. Attends P&C functions when able. Liaises with the parent body and other committee convenors on issues raised, either privately or at P&C meetings.

Vice-President (x2) – Attends all P&C meetings when able, chairs meetings in the absence of the president. Supports the P&C president and the school principal as required. Attends P&C functions when able.

Secretary – Takes minutes at all executive and P&C meetings and circulates to attendees and P&C members. Handles correspondence as required after consultation with the executive committee. Prepares notes for the school newsletter regarding P&C activities as required. Assists the president and vice presidents in their duties as and when required.

Treasurer – Receives and banks all monies from P&C fundraising and any other sources relevant to the P&C. Controls the bank accounts, maintains cheque books and deposits, and pays outstanding accounts after approval. Prepares a financial report for each P&C meeting and prepares the P&C accounts for auditing each calendar year, and arranges for the audit to be carried out in a timely manner. Attends all meetings and if unable to attend submits a financial report for the meeting.

Canteen Menu

The NSW Government last year released a revised Canteen Policy. The policy required all school canteens to revise their menus to ensure that the majority of items sold met the new "everyday' category of foods as determined by the policy. There are also ‘occasional' items which can be sold at different times during each term. These new categories were a move away from the previous ‘traffic light system' (green, orange, red). Our canteen, which is run under a leasing agreement by Maria Encinas has amended the menu in what is a transition year towards implementing the requirements of the policy.

I have been pleased to see that most students are wearing their hats in the playground. Please remind your child that not only are hats part of our school uniform, but they are an important safety precaution. We all need to be Sun Safe in the harsh Australian sunshine.

This week we have two exciting events, on Wednesday we are looking forward to seeing you at our annual meet the teacher morning at 8.30am in the hall.

Thursday we are holding our annual Swimming Carnival at Canterbury Pool, we wish all our competitors good luck. Thanks go to our dedicated Swimming Carnival Committee who have worked hard to ensure a successful fun filled carnival.

To all families celebrating Chinese New Year that commenced last Friday we wish you a Gong zee fah tsai.

Finally, it has been wonderful to see so many familiar faces and meet many new ones over the last weeks.

Your children's birthdays are wonderful times to celebrate and for many of our students they wish to share this experience with their classmates and peers.

If students wish to celebrate their birthdays at school, we request cupcakes or pre-cut cakes be sent in, preferably in disposable containers as we cannot guarantee the immediate return of containers.

Please note that no whole uncut cakes, lolly/giftbags or drinks will be accepted.

If you wish to supply cupcakes etc. for your child's birthday please speak to your child's teacher prior to the day as there may be children in the classroom with food allergies or special dietary requirements that restrict / prohibit their treats.

Student Eyecare Program

STUDENT EYECARE PROGRAM

The school is pleased to announce that it will be running a welfare initiative called the Student Eyecare Program this year. An optometrist will be onsite during school hours during Week 5 (Feb 26 – March 1) to provide students with a comprehensive eye examination. This will be done by appointment only and typically takes up to 20 minutes. Each attendee will receive an individual report regarding the eye health and a prescription will be provided if glasses are required. The school will not have access to the individual report but will be notified if glasses were recommended. Please note that this service does not sell glasses and the prescription can be taken to any optical store.

The program's aim is to detect visual problems that may interfere with a student's learning abilities and subsequently hinder their academic potential. A significant number of students have visual problems that go undetected. The main visual issues that go undetected are inadequate focusing and eye teaming abilities that could lead to symptoms such as poor concentration, fatigue, headaches and unwillingness to read.

This eye health service is available to all permanent resident students and is covered by Medicare Australia – so there is no cost to the students. The attached form is to be completed by the parent or guardian.

If you do wish for your child to participate in the program, please fill in the attached medicare details and questionnaire and return the form ASAP.

WELCOME BACK

I hope that all of our families had a wonderful break, holidaying, sharing time with family and friends and relaxing.

New Kindergarten Students / New Families

Towards the end of last year and the beginning of 2018 we have taken applications and met many new families and students who have moved into the Harcourt area. We welcome them to their new school and the Harcourt Learning Community.

Over the past week our 2018 Kindergarten students have been visiting our school for some discussions and completing ‘Best Start' assessments of their early learning progress. This week will be the official start for all of our new Kindergarten students. We welcome them to the start of their rewarding schooling journey, graduating from Year 12 in 2031!!!

Assemblies

Please be advised our K-2 and 3-6 assemblies will commence Friday Week 3 (16th February) in the school hall. All parents are welcome to attend.

School Uniform

Thank you to all our families who have updated their child's uniform over the holidays. Staff have noted the improvement and consistent wearing of uniform. We currently have in stock the broad rimmed and legionnaire's style hats available to all students K-6.

The baseball cap style, only for Years 3-6 Students is available from the school office at a price of $15.

Lowes Campsie have contacted the school and have been inundated with orders. They have advised us that new stock with the correct school emblem will be available in a few weeks time.

They are currently selling off old stock at a discounted price. The school will accept uniforms with either emblem in the interim.

2018 Classes

Students in Years 1 to 6 have been placed in their 2018 classes. We anticipate a student enrollment of around 540 students this year which allows us to establish 21 classes across K-6. Throughout Term 4 last year, teachers started to look at possible class formations based on their extensive experiences and expertise in working with your children in the school setting. This process has involved a great deal of analysis and discussion. Considerations of friendship groups, behaviour, learning and additional needs have been made.

Lots of Information

Look out for a lot of information coming home over the next week with your child. There will be information about sports programs; permission note for the 3-6 swimming carnival and more! Please make the time to read and respond to these notes.

Uniform Update 2018

2018 will see the strengthening of school culture evidenced by our high standards being supported and met in many ways. One of these areas will the wearing of the Harcourt school uniform.

Last year meetings were held to clarify the uniform and ensure the correct uniform was able to be sourced. At present all uniform items can be accessed at Lowes, Campsie with the school motto being ‘deeds AND words' displayed on the school crest. The exception to this are the school hats which can be purchased at the school office.

We currently have in stock the broad rimmed and legionnaire's style hats available to all students K-6.

The baseball cap style, only for Years 3-6 Students will be back in stock from Friday 2nd February.

Examples of the uniform and written explanations can be found on the school website and school information booklet. Uniform is a very important part of school as it ensures equity between students as well as a level of safety, from sun safety to identification of students (especially during excursions).

At Harcourt, we appreciate the support we receive from families in ensuring students are wearing the correct uniform every day. If there are any concerns over this request, please contact the office to arrange a meeting for further discussion.

As the school year draws to a close I would like to thank the students and staff for their hard work and dedication. As a I reflect back on all of the learning and activities that have taken place over the past year, it is truly amazing. Many students have achieved their learning goals and continue to strive to improve.

Uniforms

A note has gone home with all families outlining our school's uniform guidelines and expectations. We hope this provides all families with clarity regarding what items they should provide their children to ensure they are in correct uniform. Lowes Campsie currently provide our uniform supplies and should you require an updated uniform as your child grows please speak to the friendly staff there.

Our office sells our HPS hats at a cost of $15 and offers broad rimmed, legionnaires for all students and a cap for 3-6 students only.

Presentation Day

On Monday 11 December, Harcourt Public School held their annual Presentation Day for our infants (K-2) and Primary (3-6) cohorts. Five students were chosen from each class to receive an award from either Outstanding Achievement, Effort in Application or Citizenship. Our Presentation Day assemblies were a huge success so we especially would like to thank Mrs Emmans and our support staff Ms Carter, Ms Thai, Ms Moussa and Mrs Anagnostou for working tirelessly behind the scenes to make Presentation Day happen.

Student Reports

Parents and carers should have received their child's Semester Two reports on Tuesday. I was impressed once again with our students' achievements and the knowledge teachers have about their students. Parents are reminded that a SOUND rating is the expected standard for stage outcomes. Should parents have any questions about the reports, please contact your child's teacher to arrange a time to meet.

We know your time is valuable, and your willingness to contribute some of that time shows your commitment to the wellbeing of your child and all of our students. Year 6 Farewell & Graduation

Last Monday night we held our formal function at Canterbury RSL to farewell Year 6 students and to present them with their graduation packages. I hope all students and parents enjoyed the night. I would like to thank: Ms Udovicic, Ms Choi Tourle, Ms Nicos, Mr Stebbing, Ms Lee and Ms Huang for their management of this event; other staff who attended and assisted; and all those involved in the fundraising to make the event possible.

We wish every Year 6 student great success in their secondary schooling and beyond.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

Dear Parents / Carers,

The wearing of a school uniform has proven to increase a student's core need of "belonging". This can have a significant impact on self-esteem, behaviour, school engagement, relationships and the learning environment. Wearing a school uniform reduces long term costs, reduces peer pressure and distractions, contributes to school spirit, assists in student identification and promotes a safer school environment.

Our school community has overwhelmingly determined that a school uniform is to be worn daily by students. The Harcourt Public School P&C strongly support this request.

Uniform requirements

Students are to wear the correct uniform to school on a daily basis, and to school events and excursions unless otherwise stated on a permission note.
If there is a genuine reason for a child to be out of uniform on any particular day, a signed note is to go to the class teacher before school stating the student's name, the date, and the reason for not wearing correct uniform.

Uniform Purchasing

Our summer and winter uniforms are available for sale at Lowes, Campsie.

School hats are available to purchase from the front office.

Harcourt PS uniform items are listed on the back of this page. Note: Deeds AND words are the words written in the correct crest design.

Hats

Students are expected to wear the Harcourt school hat at all times whilst in school uniform. For reasons of sun safety the school has a ‘no hat play in the shade' policy.

Please note that your child's hat should be a bottle / dark green colour, preferably broad brimmed or legionnaires style to provide appropriate shade for the face, neck and ears. The school hat displaying the Harcourt crest is preferable and can be purchased from the front office.

Please also ensure that your child's name and grade are written inside the hat and are clearly legible so that the hat can be returned to its rightful owner if lost.

Please note if you are experiencing difficulty in providing the correct school uniform for your child, assistance may be available. Please contact the Administration Office for more information.

BEFORE school care is at 44-48 Sixth Ave, Campsie and CASS then buses the children to school.They operate from 6.30-8.30

AFTER school care is located in the Harcourt school hall and goes from 3:15-6.00pm.

CASS also provides a Vacation Care service.

They are a private organisation and operate separtely to the school. Discuss fees when you call them.

Many families are fortunate to have a family pet, however we request that animals are not brought onto school grounds. With a variety of allergies experienced by many students and the unpredictable behaviour of animals when around noise and larger numbers of children, animals are only allowed when an approved and planned visit has been organised. This would only be for an educational purpose as outlined in the animal in schools guidelines. We thank all community members for their support in this matter.

Each class, (K-6) has its own tub for collecting money. The winning class will be the one who raises the most money by the end of the week. So come on... what are you waiting for! We want any change you can spare. 5c, 10c, 20, & 50c (or GOLD)! You will be surprised how quickly those cents can add up.

The class teacher will be in charge of collecting the money for their class.

Prize: The class who raises the most money will enjoy a movie and ice-block afternoon at School (in their classroom). They will also be presented with an award at Assembly on Friday 1 December and have their win published in the Harcourt Newsletter.

Where will the money be donated:

The money raised will be donated to the School as a contribution for the senior equipment playground cover which has come just at the right time for the hot summer months.

Parent Information Session - Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

Dear Parents and Carers,

You may have read in previous Principal and Deputy messages on the website that Harcourt Public School is in the planning stages of implementing Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL).

PBL is an evidence-based whole school process to improve learning outcomes for all students. It is a framework that is currently implemented in many schools across NSW. Implementation of PBL will take place in stages over a period of approximately 3 years. As our implementation journey continues we will keep you well informed.

WHERE ARE WE AT?

To begin the process, the PBL team conducted a Self-Assessment Survey. The data gathered about the current behaviour systems in place; school-wide and non-classroom systems, is being used to inform the planning and decision making. The team is being guided by a Department of Education PBL Team Leader. All teachers at Harcourt have participated in workshops to look at expected behaviours in various settings. The same process has been conducted with the student community. Now it's your turn!

YOUR INPUT IS NEEDED & VALUED

A parent workshop has been planned for Friday 27th October in the library for parent input into the development of school-wide expectations. If you would like to take part in the workshops (10:00am – 11:00am) please email the school via harcourt-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au

Life Education Starts Next Week

THE LIFE EDUCATION VAN ARRIVES AT HARCOURT NEXT WEEK

Life Education NSW will be visiting our school from Tuesday October 31^st until Friday 10^th November. All K-6 classes will be attending one of their program sessions during this time. Sessions run for approximately 1 hour in length for infants and 1.5 hours for primary students.

The cost per student is $10.00. This includes a Life Education NSW program session, a student workbook and a sticker for each student. Please sign the permission note below and send it with the $10.00 payment in an envelope clearly marked with the student's name, class and event (Life Education NSW).

Alternatively, you can pay online via the school website. The permission note and money need to be returned to the money box located at the school's front office by Friday October 27^th.

Woolworths Earn & Learn - Thank You!!

A HUGE THANK YOU TO THE HARCOURT COMMUNITY

Thank you to all the parents / students / community member who helped contribute to collecting and submitting their Woolworths Earn & Learn stickers this term. We have collected thousands of stickers and are busily finalising our count before sending them over to Woolworths to redeem our points.

The points will be used to buy resources for our students and we will update you with our tally and resource bundle once we receive them later this year.

This has been our most successful Earn & Learn campaign so far and special thanks go to Ms Chen for organising and coordinating the program and our office staff (Maria, Margret, Hong & Nadia) for collecting stickers and placing donated stickers on the tally cards (a very large task).

We thank you for continuing to support Harcourt and its local community. We hope to continue this rewarding venture in future years.

Our Stage 3 Fun Day is tomorrow!

Students are highly anticipating the Fun Day tomorrow and the tokens are ready to go.

Our P&C will be selling food items throughout the day at the canteen. Students will need money to purchase these items as they are not covered by the fun day tokens.

If you wish for your child to purchase food items (cakes / ice-cream / fairy floss / soft drinks) they will need to bring money. Items will be sold at the canteen.

Finally, don't forget tomorrow is a costume day! Students should come dressed in mufti or as their favourite hero.

We look forward to a fantastic day celebrating our school and raising funds for our Stage 3 end of year activities.

Thank you Harcourt - What a success!

Thank you to our students and parent community for supporting our Salvation Army charity food drive. We have received a large amount of non-perishable items to donate to the local branch of this worthwhile charity. Pictured is only a small amount of the hundreds of donated items.

A huge amount of thanks goes to our Harcourt P&C team for their organisation and promotion of the food drive.

Items will be donated to The Salvation Army this week, providing those in the community who may not otherwise be able to access the support they need.

Lily Barclay, Selective Placement Officer from the High Performing Students Unit at the Department of Education, will be presenting an information session regarding entry into Year 7 selective schools.

The information session will be held at the Harcourt Public School hall from 2:30pm to 3:15pm on Thursday, 21st of September. The session is intended for Year 5 parents and carers, who are considering applying for 2019 entry into a selective school or any parents considering this process in the future.

Ms Barclay will cover the application process, exam structure and the various schools that can be applied to. She will also discuss qualities of applicants, and how a student's suitability for a selective school can be measured by their achievement levels to date.

Woolworths Earn & Learn - HURRY! Last Days!

The Woolworths Earn & Learn Program is closing soon!!

Parents and Students,

The Woolworths Earn & Learn promotion closes at the end of this week.

If you shop at Woolworths, please collect as many stickers as you can and stick them on the sticker sheets (found in store or collected from the front office)

Once you have filled a sticker sheet with 60 stickers (please only stick them in each box and not randomly across the sheet as this won't be accepted), bring the sticker sheet into the front office and drop it into the box.

At the end of the promotion, we'll be able to get some great new equipment. The range is extensive and offers lots of items ideal for our students – including resources for Maths, English, Science and some fantastic fun supplies for Arts & Craft, Sport and for our library. P&C Support the Salvation Army - Food Drive

At a recent P&C meeting our parents sought to support the Campsie branch of the Salvation Army by collecting food to support those in the community in need of assistance and support.

From tomorrow (Mon 11 Sept) students are asked to donate non- perishable goods (canned or sealed bottled food items, dry noodles, rice or pasta, savoury or sweet biscuits, as well as long life milk products). These food items will be collected at the end of the term and used in food parcels the welfare centre put together for community members in need.

The P&C has supplied each class with one box to collect all donated items.

The class that collected the most items will win a prize. The winning class will also receive a certificate for appreciation presented by The Salvation Army in October.

Harcourt Parents and Citizens' Association (P&C) will be holding a Father's Day Stall on Thursday, 31 August 2017.

Teachers will be taking each class to visit the stall during the morning, which allows each child the opportunity to purchase some lovely gifts. This year we have a variety of gifts, ranging from $2 - $6.

Children are invited to purchase gifts for their fathers, grandfathers and uncles.

An excursion to Barangaroo Point Park has been arranged with the Observatory Hill Environmental Education Centre on: Wednesday 16^th August and Thursday 17^th August.

This excursion supports our History unit which focuses on learning about who lived here first and how our community has changed. We begin second Semester with the promise of it being as exciting and event filled as the previous one. The teachers gather together on Day 1 to plan for the events ahead and further their professional understanding of differentiation, Aboriginal Education and the speaking and listening component of our English curriculum. They will also prepare their rooms and lessons ready for students to return on Day 2.

Over the term there are many things planned. Please keep abreast of the website and check students' bags regularly for notes. Stage 3 are heading off to camp, Stage 2 and Kindergarten are planning an excursion and in week 3 we are opening classrooms for parents to observe different ways we cater for various learning styles and abilities during our annual open session. We will also begin to contact families that have students who are beginning at Harcourt in 2018, so if you are one of these families or know of someone who is intending on enrolling their child in Kindergarten at Harcourt in 2018, please ensure their name and contact details are registered at the office.

It is hoped everyone has had a restful break and I look forward to enjoying a challenging and successful learning term ahead.

Yarn Up is a Public Speaking program, where Aboriginal students can develop their skills in public speaking, impromptu speaking and debating.

Kiara Seiver 5/6M has been participating in Yarn Up this year. She has attended two training days held at the Powerhouse Museum and the Mt Annan Botanic Gardens.

On the 14^th August, all the training will culminate in Kiara delivering a speech at NSW Parliament House. Harcourt PS congratulates Kiara on her efforts and wishes her well with her speech.

This week you will find in your child's bag notes and information forms from Future Care Mobile Dental.

The School Dentist is a unique initiative that provides high quality, on-site dental care to children aged 2-17. Under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), funded by Medicare / Australian Federal Government, the service for eligible children comes at no cost to the school or the parents.

In our office we have translations of the note in Korean, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Greek and Arabic. If you require a translated note please see the to the office staff for a translated copy.

Notes should be handed into the office. Families need to sign and return the consent forms to the office NO LATER THAN Friday 2nd June.

Technology News - Important Update For Windows Users

Dear Parents,

As you may have seen in the media over the past weekend, a major malware outbreak has spread across the world affecting many Windows computers running versions XP, 7, 8 and 10.

It is critical that all Windows devices that are brought to school for our BYOD program have the critical security update MS17-010 installed on them before they come to school. The easiest way to achieve this is to open Windows Update on your device at home to check if there are any outstanding updates and to apply them. Below is a summary of the steps you need to follow:

Click the Windows button to open the Windows menu and in the box, type Check for updates then press Enter.

The Windows Update screen will appear. If it states "Your device is up to date" with a recent last checked date, nothing needs to be done with that PC.

If the device has not been checked or updated for some time, click Check for Updates and apply any and all security updates that appear as available.

To ensure all security updates are installed completely, it is essential that the device be restarted from the shutdown menu option.

The term is moving quickly with the beginning of new programs and the completion of others. Sport in Schools has begun in earnest. Thank you to the families who have supported this program and encouraged their child to participate. Physical activity is an important part of our continued wellbeing and this program shows students a variety of ways they can be physically active in an exciting and creative way.

Thank you also goes to our P&C and community volunteers who provided a wonderful Mother's Day stall last Thursday. The gifts available were varied and I am sure all mums will enjoy their gift as much as each child enjoyed choosing them. To all mums, I hope you have a lovely Mother's Day and find time to appreciate the family around you.

NAPLAN has been completed for another year. Congratulations to all the students involved for the mature way they approached the tasks and thank you to the supervising and organising staff for the preparation and clear communication ensuring a safe, equitable and supportive environment was delivered for each student.

Farewell

The time has come to say thank you and farewell to Mr Cullen who has decided it is time for a new chapter in his life. Mr Cullen has been at Harcourt for many years and speaks fondly of students, staff and the community. He has expressed a belief of being privileged to have been a part of the Harcourt community and we thank him for his contribution to the growth of so many students and at Harcourt events. Mr Cullen's last day will be Friday 19 May. I encourage everyone to call in and see him before that date and to wish him every success in the future.

Social media

We understand how important it is to have memories of children involved in their growing years and that many of those memories involve events or receiving awards at school. With whole school events on the horizon we remind you of our protocols for filming or photographing. These protocols are outlined below. We ask that you read and adhere to them.

Film and photograph opportunities will usually occur at major events such as carnivals, parades, assemblies, special days. If you wish to film or photograph at any other time you must consult with the class of supervising teacher beforehand.
Filming or photographing can only occur with the following understanding: The focus of the filming or photographing must be your own child.
Any film or photograph taken must only be for personal use.
Photos or films that have any other children, other than your own, must not be placed on social media without permission.

We appreciate your understanding and support of these protocols.

P&C meeting

The next meeting will be held in the library, on Friday 19 May, following the K-2 assembly. We have had a strong commitment of parents at the first two meetings of the year. I encourage everyone who is available to be a part of our meetings so we can work together to provide a stimulating and engaging learning environment for every student. National Walk Safely To School Day - Friday 19th May 2017

National Walk Safely to School Day is an annual event when all Primary School children will be encouraged to walk and commute safely to school.

The event will be held throughout Australia on Friday 19 May 2017.

Everyone can participate in this event, even if you need to drive, park the car a few blocks away and walk the rest of the way.

This is a great way for you to:

reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour
promote the health benefits of walking
ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult's hand when crossing the road
help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians

Walk safely to school and promote being healthy, active and safe with your child!

Mothers Day Stall - Thank you

A massive thank you to our P&C helpers for organising, setting up and selling gifts for Mothers Day this coming Sunday.

All students were given the opportunity to buy a gift for the day and thanks to the time and effort of these helpers the stall has been a great success.

Mother's Day Stall - Help Requested

Dear parents/carers,

Harcourt P&C will be holding a Mothers' Day Stall this year on Thursday, 11th of May as part of the P&C fund raising initiatives for 2017.

Every teacher will bring their class down to the stall and all students will have the opportunity to purchase some lovely gifts. Due to the NAPLAN test on the day, we will manage the stall visits into two sessions, K-2 in the morning and 3-6 in the afternoon.

This year we have a variety of items between $2 and $5.

Children are invited to purchase gifts for their mothers, grandmothers and aunts. Children are asked to bring cash only to school on the day of the stall. Small denominations would be greatly appreciated.

All proceeds from the Mother's Day sale will support Harcourt students in their learning experiences.

We would love your assistance! If you are able to spare an hour or two in the morning

Term 1 has come and gone with great speed. It has been a term full of many events and procedures, both established and new. Over the term we have had the swimming carnival, swim scheme, meet the teacher, Harmony Day and Fairy tale day, just to mention a few.

We have begun some new initiatives such as enrichment groups and meet the executive, held parent teacher interviews earlier in the year (Term 1) and we were excited by record numbers at the two P&C meetings where the 2017 executive were nominated and decided. Harcourt has certainly been a great place to be!

Thank you to everyone for such a wonderful Term 1. Have a happy, safe and enjoyable holiday with your family and we look forward to seeing students on Wednesday 26 April, ready for another eventful term.

PSSA trials are complete and notes sent home to those students who have been successful in being selected to either a Football (Soccer), Touch Football or Netball team. PSSA games begin the first Friday back of Term 2 (April 28) so please make sure you return permission notes and money.

The P&C had their AGM and first meeting for the year on Friday 17th March. All positions of the executive and committee positions were declared vacant and a new team elected.

The new team for this year are:

P&C Executive
President – Emily Giannopoulos, nominated, seconded by Nur and was elected unopposed.
Vice Presidents – Kyung Jang, & Norren Nakic, nominated, seconded by Nur and was elected unopposed.
Secretary – Nur Cahaya Tobing, nominated, seconded by Noreen, and was elected unopposed.
Treasurer – Idith Zaman, nominated, seconded by Emilly and was elected unopposed.

I congratulate all members of the P&C and welcome new members to our team. We look forward to a productive and rewarding 2017.

School Invoices - Term 1 2017

Payments for all general fees are now due. These include school learning resources, technology subscriptions, School Magazine and provision of home reading resources. The NSW Government also allows public schools to collect a voluntary contribution for each student attending their local government school. The school has set the 2017 contributions of $40 for the first child and established a sliding scale cost for families of more than one child. This money is used to provide resources for classrooms e.g paper and art supplies. We have a high level of payments received and the school is very grateful for this support.

This year, students across K-6 will be using a range of subscription websites and applications. These included Jolly Phonics, ABC Reading Eggspress and Mangahigh. Students can explore new topics and practice their literacy and math skills through teacher assigned tasks and interactive activities. As students learn, their activity feeds into reports that show important information such as strengths and weaknesses in a particular concept. Through the use of educational websites and applications we are able to provide a personalised learning experience for all students. As with most educational programs there is a licensing fee to enable full use of the site which is the technology fee being requested this year.

How to pay:

To assist with this process online payments via the school website are preferred or you can make correct cash payments to the office. No change will be given.

Thank you to our wonderful students who were busy cleaning up the playground and the front of the school for Clean Up Australia Day on Friday 10th March. The students at Harcourt Public School understand the importance of looking after the environment and always ensure their rubbish goes in the bin.

Welcome to 2017

Welcome back to Harcourt for 2017. I am pleased and excited to be appointed substantive principal for Harcourt PS and I look forward to many years of building positive, collaborative relationships focussed on providing an excellent learning environment for every student at our school.

This year we have some new staff joining our team. We welcome Ms Udovicic, Mr Stebbing , Miss Dwyer and Mrs Psomas. Each of them come with previous teaching experience and have settled into the Harcourt team with ease. 22 classes have been formed and students are beginning with formal learning experiences. Kindergarten have also had a full week at school and have displayed settled and positive attitudes towards their new environments.

The organisation of newsletters will change this year. Fortnightly updates and information bulletins will be posted to the website along with class information and work samples. In the research related to the Strategic Direction 3 of our School Plan, it was determined that further endeavours to improve communication with the community was wanted and encouraged. Our first step is to begin working with the information provided on the website and the community notice board. This will take some time but we will endeavour to make the changes as soon as possible.

Next week we will be having a meet the teacher morning. Class teachers will be based in the school hall with the support staff around the playground area. We encourage you to come and introduce yourself to your child/ren's teacher and support staff. This is an informal gathering and specific details regarding individual children's progress will not be discussed. If you require a separate time to speak to the teacher please let them know or ask at the office for an appointment.

The following week we will be conducting a meet the executive session. It is an opportunity for you to meet with the supervisor of each stage and to hear about some of the opportunities being provided. At this meeting I will also present the vision of Harcourt I was asked to outline when applying for the principal's position and ask for your feedback as to what that vision means for you and your child. Following our session we will have a cuppa and cake so come along and meet with the team.

P&C Silver coin fundraiser

We want any change you can spare. 5c, 10c, 20, & 50c (or GOLD)! You will be surprised how quickly those cents can add up.

Each class will have its own tub for collecting money. The winning class will be the one who raises the most money by the end of the week. So come on... what are you waiting for!

Prize: The class who raises the most money will enjoy a movie and ice-block afternoon at school (in their classroom). They will also be presented with an award at Assembly on Friday 2 December and have their win published in the Harcourt Newsletter.

Where will the money be donated: The money raised will be donated to the SRC of 2016. SRC members represent all students in the school and organise ways for students to participate and contribute to their school community. The SRC will be asked for recommendations of possible ways to spend the monies raised.

Teddy Bear's Picnic

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Welcome back to another productive term at Harcourt Public School.

I wish to advise you that I will be on leave for the first 6 weeks of term due to having to attend to some personal concerns.

Mrs Kathy Powzun, Director Public Schools NSW for the Strathfield Network consequently has asked Mr Chad Harris to relieve as principal during my absence.

I know you will join me in welcoming Mr Harris to the position. He is very excited to be a part of our learning community and has met with me over the holiday period to ensure a smooth transition of leadership.

P & C BBQ fundraiser

What is Transition?

For young children, moving from preschool or home to Kindergarten is one of the most significant transitions they will experience.The transition program allows parents and students access to a variety of opportunities which will better prepare them for school life.

What are the benefits of a transition program?

A transition program provides opportunities for:

¿social and emotional development to prepare students for school life;

¿becoming familiar with school routines; supporting families in assisting their children's learning before and during Kindergarten;

¿forming positive relationships between children and their families with the school.

Feeback session for Kindergarten parents

Kindergarten Parents and Carers,

You are invited to a "PLAN Feedback To Parents Report" information session. The session will take place in the school library on Thursday 31 March 2016. It will start at 8:30am and will finish before the school bell rings at 9:15am.

All Kindergarten teachers will be at the information session.

During the session we will be explaining the format of the report you have received. We will also discuss how you can use this information to help your child at home. For example, the teachers will provide demonstrations of literacy and numeracy activities that are fun, quick and easy to complete at home with your child.

We look forward to seeing you at the information session.

Student safety outside of school times

Many students walk home after school or have times when they are not in direct sight of an adult outside of school hours. Below are some suggested conversations you could have with your child to ensure their safety at all times.

Make sure your parents or another adult you know knows where you are at all times.
Always walk straight home or to the place you are walking to. Walk near busier roads and streets, or use paths where there are lots of people.
Know where safe places are – a shop, service station, police station, library or school. Go to these places and ask them to call the police.
Don't talk to people you don't know and never get into a car with someone you don't know. If a car stops on the side of the road and you don't know the person inside, do not stop.
If you are scared and can use a phone, call 000 and tell them you are scared.
If someone tries to grab you, yell out 'Go away, I don't know you'. This lets other people know you have been approached by someone you don't know.

These suggestions have been provided by the NSW Police Media Unit.

School Swimming and Water Safety Program

The swimming and water safety program begins on Monday. If your child is enrolled for this course please remind them to wear their swimming costume under their uniform and to bring goggles (if required), a towel sunscreen and of course, their school hat. This program will occur at the Canterbury Pool and runs from Monday 14 March and Thursday 24 March.

After school safety

Safety is important for everyone at Harcourt Public School. We are fortunate to have play equipment facilities for the development and enjoyment of students. These pieces of equipment are for use between 9.15am and 3.15pm and MUST have a teacher present for supervision.

For this reason we are unable to offer the facilities to students after school, as teachers are required to meet and prepare for the coming day at this time. To assist us in ensuring the safety of ALL students, we ask that you remind your children they are to only use the equipment during the school day when a teacher is present for supervision.

Harcourt PS celebrated Grandparents Day with a multicultural parade and a delicious international feast. Many thanks to the family and friends who helped celebrate the day with us. The students who came to school in their national costume were an outstanding feature of the day.

We would like to congratulate our Harcourt Debaters for 2015: Isaac, Abdul, Alex, Megh, Nathan, Ellie, Yumi and Paula. These wonderful students participated in the Granville/Strathfield School Education Areas Debating Program and won 2 out of 4 debates. We are very proud of their efforts.

K-2 Athletics Carnival

New P&C for 2015-16

I am delighted to say that we now have a P&C in place for 2015-2016. My very sincere thanks to the new committee. They are:

Emily Giannopoulos (President),

Marcelo Zavala-Baeza (Vice-President),

Nur Cahaya Tobing (Secretary) and

Yunush Manandhar (Treasurer).

We are very excited to have our new committee in place. The first P&C meeting will be held on Friday July 24^th (week 2 next term) straight after the K-2 assembly (at 10.00am in the school staffroom). The second meeting will be on Tuesday 18^th August at 7pm in the staffroom. The P&C proposed to have one daytime Friday meeting followed by one Tuesday evening meeting – so everyone has the opportunity to attend. Again – my most sincere thanks and welcome to our new P&C.

Learning Assistance Mentoring Program (LAMP)

Our LAMP program will be running again on Wednesday mornings from 9.15-10.45am.

The LAMP program was set up to support Year 2 students who need extra help to move from K-2 to years 3-6.

Some of these students have trouble making friends, others have trouble joining in games. Some find it hard to keep still in the classroom, others find it hard to share teacher time. All are students who the teachers believe could do very well if they had someone to take an interest in them and guide them.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!!!!!

Can you spare 90 minutes each week to be a mentor in our LAMP program? There is a whole-day training session on 20 July, 2013.

Payments to Harcourt On-Line

You will notice on the yellow bar above (Newsletters, Calendar, Make a Payment, ....) that there is a button where you can now make a payment to the school on-line. So much easier than bringing a cash or cheque down to school. Now you can pay for excursuions, school resources etc at home on-line whenever you like. We hope this service will make things just a little easier for you !
